Eat Healthily
Ever heard of the phrase “a carrot a day keeps the eye doctor away”? Many types of food can help with vision preservation. Vitamin C-rich foods such as strawberries, oranges, and red bell peppers help to reduce the risks of macular degeneration caused by aging. Eating foods with beta-carotene like carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, and kale do help with it as well. Long story short, eat your two servings of fruits and vegetables every day, and your eyesight will not deteriorate as quickly.
Go for Regular Eye Exams
Aging is something we cannot stop, and that also means that we cannot control how fast our vision deteriorates. To cope with the change in clarity, prescription glasses are often given. However, many mature adults seem to not realize their need for glasses until it is too late. One of the best ways to prevent that is to schedule regular eye exams. You may not always find a problem with these annual exams, but it does help to detect any vision problems and solve them quicker. Aside from poor sight, optometrists can also check for other eye conditions such as cataracts or even general health conditions like diabetes. With that said, prescription glasses have to be worn as much as possible. It not only helps you to see clearly but also reduces eye strain. Our eyes work harder to focus when prescription glasses are not worn, and can also lead to other vision issues.
Take Eye Breaks
Eye breaks are also essential to prevent one’s vision from going bad. If you are constantly using the computer or television, it is good to take a 30-second break to look at some trees for relaxation. Better yet, go out and get some exercise. Exercising improves blood circulation and increases the oxygen in the body and eyes, improving your eyesight. Any type of exercise will do good, and it does not have to be too physically demanding. A simple walk or outdoor yoga session will suffice. On that note, remember to wear sunglasses when you are out in the sun, as it can damage your eyes and could cause cancer.
Use Ample Lighting
Lighting is also important to prevent eyestrain. Dimly lit rooms may change the ambiance, but it does make it more difficult to see. As much as possible, keep your rooms well-lit, especially if you enjoy reading. It will help you focus on your materials more without the added strain on the eyes.
