There are a number of good things that come with age including perspective and wisdom. Unfortunately, your energy can also be sapped by the changes that take place as you age. Maybe you don’t walk as fast as you used to. Maybe you don’t dance as much as you used to.
Want to keep some pep in your step? There are ways to maintain your energy level as you age. We are going to explore some of those here. Mainly, we’ll concentrate on three areas:
- Sleep
- Exercise
- Diet
Healthy Diet
It should come as no surprise that the older a person gets, the more important it becomes for them to eat the right kinds of food. Try to partake in meals that are not only delicious but nutritious, as well. Make sure you’re eating enough throughout the day and getting all of the nutrients and vitamins necessary for someone your age.
Additionally, if you have dietary restrictions, do not ignore them. If you’re supposed to watch your sugar, salt, or cholesterol intake, do so. The old adage does still ring true, to an extent: “You are what you eat.” Eat unhealthily and you’ll be unhealthy – that means less energy.
Getting Enough Sleep
For some, sleep is a necessary evil. For others, sleep is a luxury. Some people just love to sleep. Others only sleep because they have to. For everyone, it’s a bit different. What’s relatively constant, however, is that each and every person needs enough sleep. Approximately seven hours a night should be good for most people of retirement age and above. Not enough sleep at night is going to mean not enough energy during the day.
Here are some tips for getting a better night’s sleep:
- As often as you can, wake up and go to bed at the same time
- As much as possible, keep your bedroom quiet, dark, and cool
- Well before bedtime, turn off your TV, smartphone, and computer
- Try, by mid-afternoon, to finish all your caffeine intake
- Right before bedtime, avoid drinking alcohol
- Where you can, cut out stress
- Make sure you’re not allowing yourself to get dehydrated
Exercise and Moving Around
Get up off that couch! Take a walk. Go to a dance. Join an exercise class with a friend, even if it’s something like chair yoga or sit-and-be-fit. The whole point here is to get up and get moving. We are not expecting anyone to run a marathon unless, of course, they want to. Just don’t be sedentary.
Swimming is also great exercise, so if there is a pool you can take advantage of, do so. If walking around a golf course is too difficult, consider taking up the sport but only play at courses that offer golf carts. There’s a lot you can do to get some exercise.
Remember, an object at rest tends to stay at rest. Get up and get moving, and your energy should increase.
