Though the weather is finally turning warmer and outdoor exercises can once again resume, occasionally, mother nature is going to throw a cooler day, a storm, or some other kind of inclement weather in the way. This doesn’t mean, however, that it has to derail the workout routine. There are numerous indoor exercises that retirement age individuals can do, in addition to walking, playing games, and exercising outside. The rain will eventually clear and the weather will once again warm, but in the meantime, here are some exercises that your loved one can do indoors with others in a community or at the gym.
Why Exercise in the Golden Years?
A study found that retirement age individuals who exercised are less prone to being injured or disabled. Those who didn’t exercise spent 25% more time incapacitated or immobilized. That’s not all. When retirement age individuals engage in physical activity regularly, they’re more likely to enjoy the following benefits:
- Enhanced balance, flexibility, and mobility
- Reduced impact of Alzheimer’s disease and other illnesses
- Lost weight or maintained a healthy weight
- Added extra years to their lives
- Boosted mood
All of that said, consider conferring with a personal trainer regarding physical fitness goals, and speak to the physician before starting any kind of exercise regime. Let’s talk about some indoor exercises.
Exercising at Home
Consider the following activities that can be done at home:
For balance:
- Strength exercises (resistance training)
- Step exercises (aerobics)
- Walking in a straight line (both normally and heel to toe)
- Balancing on one foot
Also for in the home:
- Wii games (or some other video games that involve physical activity)
- Fitness apps
- Exercise videos (check out YouTube)
Additional Sources for Indoor Exercises
If your loved one doesn’t feel like staying at home and likes to get out and about a little (but still wants to do exercises), here are a few additional ideas for indoor activities:
- Indoor pool (for stress relief and muscle strength, flexibility, joints, heart health benefits, and more)
- Gym membership (this isn’t for everyone, but many today enjoy this option for its socialization, training, and education opportunities, as well as the wide selection of equipment)
- Walking (there are numerous indoor locations perfect for walking such as a conservatory, school, shopping mall, museum, etc.)
Stretching Exercises
Always remember – whether exercising indoors or outdoors – to stretch before and after the exercise routine. This can help reduce the risk of injury. What’s more, on an off day when your loved one just doesn’t feel like exercising, a bit of stretching will at least get the blood flowing, the body moving, and the muscles flexing/stretching.
