Seniors are the most patriotic people in the nation. According to recent statistics from the Pew Research Center, about 90% of older adults are invested in celebrating their American roots. There’s no time like Independence Day to appreciate the country, making it an important celebration for many seniors!
Luckily, there are lots of 4th of July events across Indianapolis, IN. The city is a cultural hub for art and activity, making it the perfect city for patriotic celebrations.
Read on to learn about some Northside community events to look forward to in July!
Noblesville’s July 4th Parade
Noblesville, Indiana is about 23 miles north of downtown Indianapolis. It’s most accessible to seniors with family members who can take them out for a fun Independence Day outing.
If this describes you, you’re in for a treat! Noblesville’s July 4th parade is one of the best 4th of July events in the area.
The parade, called the “Stars & Stripes Forever Parade,” begins at 4 PM. There are lots of patriotic floats and groups looking to show off how much they love the USA.
After the invigorating parade, a festival begins. It is located in Forest Park and features activities like live music and delicious food vendors.
To top it off, those in attendance can also enjoy a fireworks display at the end of the night. You can enjoy the colors, unique firework shapes, and American pride of the attendees. It’s the perfect memory to enjoy with loved ones before heading back to your senior living community at the end of the day.
Fireworks Displays
What are Independence Day celebrations without fireworks? Boring, that’s what!
Luckily, Indianapolis seniors don’t need to go all the way to Noblesville to enjoy a fun, vibrant fireworks show. There are several right in their backyard, including:
- Booms after the Indianapolis Indians vs the Louisville Bats baseball game at 6:45 PM
- Fireworks on the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site after the social between 11 AM and 2 PM
- Fireworks at the Grand Park in Westfield are accompanied by other activities
On a clear night, residents of the best Indianapolis senior living community may be able to see some fireworks while relaxing in outdoor amenities. There’s no guarantee, and the fireworks will be at a distance. Still, this may work well for those who can’t easily leave community grounds or who find close fireworks overstimulating.
Downtown Indy’s Fourth Fest
Downtown Indy’s Fourth Fest also ends the day with a 20-minute fireworks display. However, this isn’t even the main attraction of the event!
Since the event is presented by the Indiana Donor Network and Donate Life Indiana, seniors can expect interviews and programs that benefit a good cause.
Some things to look forward to include:
- A pop, R&B, and dance band called Living Proof
- Pavel & Direct Contract, musical artists who draw influence from salsa music
- Food trucks
- Ice cream stands
There’s also a countdown to the fireworks that start at 10 PM, so everyone at the event can get ramped up before the show!
If you’re an older adult looking to bring grandchildren to the Fourth Fest, there’s also a Kids Zone on St Clair Street. It’s the perfect location for children to get into the holiday spirit!
CarmelFest
Carmel is about 24 miles from Indianapolis, but their 4th of July festival is well worth the drive for most seniors.
After a parade at 10:30 AM, older adults and their families can enjoy a large, unique festival. Some attractions to expect include:
- A beer and wine garden for sampling local and regional beverages
- Local cuisine at restaurants, stands, and food trucks
- Live music in multiple genres, including classic rock and country tunes
- Local artists who are inspiring in their creativity
- Stands where artists and other vendors can sell goods to those at the festival
Some unique foods to sample include:
- Mexican/American/Honduran fusion street food
- Dippin Dots, the ice cream of the future that comes in bead form
- Bubble tea
- Gelat crepes
- Authentic Indian food from carts
- Big Bear shaved ice that comes in tons of different flavors
There’s more than that, too, so head off to the festival to see what they have to offer!
Symphony on the Prairie
Senior-friendly holidays require events for older adults regardless of their activity level. Some seniors may find parties, festivals, and fireworks too loud and overstimulating. Others with mobility or cognitive challenges will have trouble safely navigating bustling, crowded venues.
Symphony on the Prairie isn’t strictly a 4th of July event, but it happens between June 27th and August 29th. There’s a show on the 4th, and it’s the perfect event to enjoy with family.
During these shows, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performs a variety of different songs. However, they add a patriotic twist on July 3-5.
The “Star Spangled Symphony,” as they call it, features patriotic music. This includes a special performance of the song “Rhapsody in Blue!” Plus, there’s a fireworks show when the orchestra is done playing, so you don’t need to sacrifice the show in order to enjoy the music.
The gates for all performances open at 6 PM, and the concert starts at 8. Attendees can bring their own picnics, which is ideal for seniors on specialized diets. Plus, reserved seating is available to ensure accessibility for those with mobility challenges!
